KIRO began broadcasting on December 3, 1961 as an ABC affiliate. It was founded by Charles Moore, who also founded KING-TV (now KQED-TV) in San Francisco. Moore sold KIRO to the Hearst Corporation in 1984. KING 5 first signed on the air on September 18, 1956 as the second television station in the Pacific Northwest after KIRO-TV (channel 7). It was founded by the Graham family of Seattle.
